Thank the families who stood against crimes of hate
Eleven years after two men lost their lives to brutal hate crimes, the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Act is finally on its way to the President's desk.
Without the constant voice of Judy and Dennis Shepard, and the commitment of the family of James Byrd, Jr. – whose name was added to the bill recently – this victory would not have been possible.
The Shepards pushed through the pain of losing their son, through hate-mongers picketing his funeral, through countless political setbacks. And after the brutal racially-motivated murder of James Byrd, Jr., his family became fierce advocates for stronger and more inclusive hate crimes legislation.
Please watch this powerful video, then thank these families for everything they have done to pass this critical law.
