The short explanation of this alert was:
On October 29, 2004, President Bush said: "I don't think we should deny people rights to a civil union... if that's what a state chooses to do."
On January 16, 2005, President Bush said: "...[I] will not press senators to pass a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage." This same day, Counselor to the President, Dan Bartlett, said that Bush "will spend political capital" to push for the constitutional amendment.
On January 20, 2005, President Bush will say: "I do solemnly swear... to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States."
