GLBT Americans pay federal taxes like everyone else, yet they don't qualify for the basic federal protections that married couples and their children can count on. It's blatantly unequal.

I am writing as your constituent and a Human Rights Campaign supporter to express my support for legislation that will help recognize GLBT individuals and families as equal citizens.

The thousands of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Americans who file their federal taxes currently face unequal treatment under federal law unable to ensure that their families are protected financially.

That means that members of your constituency, who work hard and contribute equally to the system are forced to assume unfair financial burdens just to protect their families.

These are family matters. The right to take time off to care for a sick partner, knowing your job is secure; the right to qualify for health care, retirement, and other benefits for the domestic partners of federal civilian employees; the right to include your family in your employer-based health plan without facing significant tax penalties - all these rights are currently denied to same-sex couples.

That's why I support the following legislation:

* The Domestic Partnership Benefits Obligations Act (H.R. 4838, S. 2521)
* Tax Equity for Health Plan Beneficiaries (H.R. 1820, S. 1556)
* Family and Medical Leave Act (H.R. 2792)

These three bills bring together a pro-family, pro-equality legislative agenda that seeks to secure equal treatment under federal law for GLBT individuals, same-sex couples, and their children.

I'm confident that you'll continue to represent the interests of all your constituents by championing these bills in your chamber.
