HRC's Featured member & activist of the month: David, Eric and Max Akridge
What do you get the fathers who have "everything"? How about a marriage license? That's what 4-year-old Max Akridge had in mind when he set up a lemonade and cookie stand outside his family's home, just a short walk from HRC. Besides offering passers-by relief from the heat, Max wanted to raise money to help win the fight for marriage equality. His fathers, together since 1998, joined HRC in 2004 and have renewed their support every year since. Clearly, they've also raised consciousness of their young son. "Several months ago he came home from preschool and asked if we were married. We told him that our government wouldn't allow us to get married. It was Max's idea to raise money and awareness of marriage equality. In the end, it was Max who taught us a lesson in salesmanship and charity." The unified involvement of the Akridge household is another example of how HRC support is increasingly a family-wide commitment based on fundamental family values. Next time you're in Washington, look for Max's stand on P Street NW, and introduce yourself as a fellow HRC member! |
